Ammophilia breviligulata - American Beachgrass helps in the Formation and Preservation of Critical Sand Dunes. Dunes play an important role in protecting the shoreline by buffering the incoming waves. Typically the winter steals sand from beaches and summer replaces it. A dune well planted, especially with Cape American beachgrass, can be stabilized and continue to trap blowing sand. Dunes can also be destroyed by heavy storms and flooding tides which undercut the dune structure. Fencing and replanting with Cape American beachgrass can help to rebuild the dune system.
Generally the beachgrass grows up 2 to 3 feet high, the long blade like leaves swaying with the wind.
In the spring new green growth appears and quickly grows up and spreads until fall when the leaves brown.
American Beachgrass will withstand Dry, Salty and Windy conditions. It will survive Burial by Shifting Sand and thrives in very Hot, Unshaded Areas. It also lives on little Water and Organic Nutrients.

Cape American Beachgrass is normally harvested and planted when the plants are in or near dormancy. This allows for easy handling. Multiple culms (stems)are planted per hole, this technique ensures a high rate of success.
Beachgrass is sometimes grown in larger containers, but is not necessary for success and can add dramatically to the cost of a plant.
Bayberry Hill Farm offers Cape American Beachgrass in the culm or liner form. Both forms can be planted directly into the conservation area quickly and easily saving time and money.
