Dianellas are a drought tolerant sedge forms a nice ornamental tussock. It has showy seed heads in late Spring. Dianella caerulea can tolerate dry and damp conditions, and is a widespread native found in many parts of Australia. Dianellas are southern Hemisphere spreading perennials in the lily family.
Tulbaghias despite its name and distinctive garlicky smell, society garlic is not a garlic at all, it is however a member of the lily family. Though modern nutrionists advise against eating it because it can cause stomach problems it was acceptable to eat in the past to eat a 'garlic' and avoid the unfortunate 'garlic breath'. My advise, use this very attractive plant for its ornamental use. The leaves are long, thin and evergreen and it has attractive purple flowers. Perhaps most importantly, it gives off a gorgeous garlicky aroma.
Dianella cearulea variegata-Blue Berry Flax is an attractive cream and green variegated variety growing to .6 (2ft) in height with leaves aprox 25 -50mm (1-2" wide).


Tulbaghia violacea - Society Garlic, the straight green variety is quick to grow and loves dry hot areas. Grows to 0.6m (2ft) with thin green lelaves.
