Ophiopogon nigrescens

Ophiopogon planiscapus 'nigrescens', or Black Mondo Grass, is an evergreen perennial that makes a great groundcover or edge plant for the border of a garden. It will grow to a height of 10" (25cm) and 12" (30cm) spread.

Unfortunately the Black Mondo is extremely slow to grow but makes a stunning plant to mix in borders with silver, red and green plantings.

The Black Mondo is quite drought tolerant and can also tolerate temperatures in the mid teens (F), below freezing in C. They are hardy in USDA zones 5-9.

In late summer to early fall, the plants bloom, forming white flowers with a pink flush ¼ inch (0.6 cm) flowers. Shiny black fruits follow flowers.

Once the bloom is finished the Black Mondo Grass puts on a burst of growth so cutting them back right after blooming gives you fresh growth.  Raking can scar the leaves so care should be taken when cleaning up around the Black Mondo Grass Plantings.

Black Mondo is currently available as a rooted liner grown from T/C, the liner is a US size 72CP, is well rooted and will develop well after transplant.

The liners look like this....

The adult plants are rich black, grass like and stunning. Remember to set your expectations to reasonable for the growth of this plant
